This meticulously-crafted three bedroom house is located in the coastal township of Point Lonsdale on Victoria's Bellarine Peninsula. The home embodies a harmonious blend of passive solar and passive house principles, ensuring year-round comfort, energy efficiency, and a minimal environmental footprint.
Our approach here was to create living spaces that respond naturally to the natural environment. The floor plan is arranged around a central axis that focuses on the evocative, twisting trunks of Moonah trees at the front and rear of the property. Large panels of openable glazing visually frame the garden from within, providing direct connection to multiple decked areas and native planting beyond.
By leveraging the sun’s trajectory, prevailing breezes, and thermal mass, we have optimied the building’s orientation. External walls, roof and floor are made air-tight and insulated above standard to maximise indoor comfort with minimal reliance on mechanical heating or cooling. Remarkably, the house contains no mechanical cooling and a single electric feature fireplace for heating, yet remains temperate all year round due to the high performing building envelope.
Our commitment to authenticity and sustainability is reflected in the robust material palette. The interiors feature Blackbutt timber lining, imparting warmth, unique grain patterns, and a connection to local flora. Externally and throughout the home, cut stone surfaces evoke a sense of permanence and craftsmanship, while also contributing to thermal performance.
We were fortunate to work with owners who share a philosophy that allocating project budget to material quality and thermal performance makes more sense than building a large floor plate. The result is a compact, warm, light-filled forever home with enduring, timeless qualities that suit the owners' needs perfectly.
